On 28th February 2009 Newport Bridge celebrated 75 years since its official opening.

Research volunteers for the British Steel Archive Project team were asked to carry out research on Newport Bridge to feed into events and activities planned by the Community Engagement team to mark the 75th anniversary of this Teesside landmark.

The research volunteers explored the Newport area before the bridge was built, the building of the bridge, its official opening and the operation of the bridge. As well as using material from Teesside Archives the research volunteers also attended an informative session at Middlesbrough Reference Library to look at some material held there.  During half term the Community Engagement team ran an event at Archibald Primary School in Middlesbrough that included a small display of material from the archives on the Newport Bridge. The team also delivered a bridge building challenge for families, which will be ran at various venues in the future.

One of the project volunteers, Valerie Harrison, was tasked with looking through and indexing items in some boxes stored at Teesside Archives marked Newport Bridge. Please click here to read about Valerie's findings.
